ARCOmadrid 2026

Founded in 1982, ARCOmadrid was among the pioneers of the modern European art fair. More than four decades later, Spain’s leading contemporary art event continues to occupy a distinctive position within the international circuit.

Fairs such as Art Basel or Frieze London are closely tied to the upper tiers of the global art market, by contrast, ARCO has long cultivated a different identity: one centred on discovery, dialogue and a strong transatlantic cultural exchange.

The 2026 edition marked the fair’s 45th anniversary. Held at IFEMA Madrid from March 3–8, it brought together 211 galleries from 30 countries and more than 1,300 artists. Spanish galleries accounted for 34 per cent of exhibitors, with 72 participants, joined by strong contingents from Germany (24 galleries), Brazil (15), France (14) and Portugal (13).

From its inception, ARCO positioned itself as a place to encounter emerging artists and ambitious work without the excessive commercial pressures associated with the very top end of the market. “Inviting blue-chip galleries was never the point,” said the fair’s director, Maribel López. Some of the largest galleries participate occasionally, she notes, but the fair’s core identity has always been oriented towards discovery rather than dominance.

That ethos has helped sustain ARCO’s longstanding focus on Latin America. The fair has become an important meeting point for European and Latin American galleries, artists and collectors. As López puts it, the fair’s Latin American emphasis functions as “a geographical focus without being geographically binding,” encouraging dialogue across regions rather than strictly defining it.

Compared with other international fairs, ARCO retains a noticeably different atmosphere. Often described as more relaxed and discursive, the event attracts a strong presence of curators, critics and institutional representatives, alongside collectors. The result is a fair that feels less purely market-driven than some of its global counterparts.

Painting remains dominant medium, though frequently approached through expanded or experimental forms. Several presentations focused on material processes and sculptural interventions, while others explored themes of identity, memory and political history. The fair’s scale and breadth reflected the diversity of contemporary practice, with works ranging from intimate works on paper to large-scale installations.

As in previous years, ARCO’s prize programme highlighted standout presentations. The Lexus Award for Best Stand and Artistic Content went to the Guatemalan gallery Proyectos Ultravioleta, whose installation combined paintings and sculptures displayed in an unconventional arrangement that emphasised colour and formal relationships between the works.

The inaugural Engel & Völkers Award. Profiles | Latin American Art was awarded to Commonwealth and Council + Patron, recognising their presentation of work by Los Angeles-based artist Harold Mendez. His practice examines transnational experience through a combination of references to geography, ritual and memory, extending his investigation into embodiment and loss.

The 12th Opening. New Galleries Award was presented to the Dakar-based gallery Selebe Yoon, for its presentation of works by artists Alioune Diouf and Fatim Soumaré. The Catalan gallery Spiritvessel received a special mention for its project with artist Víctor Jaenada.

After periods of turbulence in the Spanish art market over the past decades, ARCO now appears to be entering a renewed phase of stability. The anniversary edition reflected on the fair’s past while gesturing towards possible futures. Visitors were invited to consider new artistic languages and experimental practices while reflecting on ARCO’s role as a platform for dialogue across geographies.
