SAO PAULO — MAC USP: Modern & Contemporary Collection Tour
MAC USP: Modern & Contemporary Collection Tour
ABOUT MAC USP
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (MAC USP), founded in 1963, was created when the university received the collection of the former MAM São Paulo, including works gathered by patrons Yolanda Penteado and Ciccillo Matarazzo and prize-winning artworks from the São Paulo Biennial up to 1961. Today, MAC USP holds one of the most significant modern and contemporary art collections in Latin America, with around 10,000 works.
The collection includes masterpieces by Modigliani, Picasso, Miró, Calder, Kandinsky, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Di Cavalcanti, Volpi and Lygia Clark, as well as important works by Lucio Fontana, Artur Barrio, Henry Moore, Cildo Meireles, Joseph Beuys, Leda Catunda, Rosângela Rennó and Jonathas de Andrade. Housed in a building designed in the 1950s by Oscar Niemeyer and his team, the museum is recognised as a leading centre for research, teaching and the study of modern and contemporary art.
TOUR DESCRIPTION
Join us for a guided visit through the exhibitions on display at MAC USP, housed in the museum’s iconic building designed by Oscar Niemeyer. During the tour, we explore selected works from the museum’s modern and contemporary collections — including pieces by artists such as Modigliani, Picasso, Miró, Calder, Kandinsky, Tarsila do Amaral, Lygia Clark, Cildo Meireles and Artur Barrio.
Rather than presenting a permanent display, MAC USP organises its galleries through curatorial projects that bring different parts of the collection into dialogue with contemporary artistic practices. As we move through the exhibitions, we discuss how these works reflect shifts in modernism, conceptual art and experimental media, offering visitors a concise and engaging introduction to one of Latin America’s most significant collections of modern and contemporary art.
